Moving files between folders

Currently users need the "A" permission to move files between folders in a specific workspace. We would like to have this changed so users with less rights ("VES" maybe) can move files. At our firm the staff does most of the work for the attorneys so granting the assistants this ability is rather crucial. We do not want to give them "A" rights.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

That is true if you have the "Inherit access rights from Folders" option enabled on your cabinet.  With this enabled, moving a document to a different folder will change the access on the document to match the ACL of the folder.  In order to change access on a document in ND you would need to have "A" rights to the document.  For example, if you had a folder that was restricted to only a certain person or group and you moved a document into it, that document would then be restricted.  We would not want to give this ability to users that do not have "A" rights to the document.  An option for you may be to disable folder inheritance on your cabinet.  If you are not relying on access being applied at the folder level this may work for you.

Hi Dan,

Unfortunately this will not work for us. If we turn off the "inherit" then users will not see any files that are created by other users. We would then need to go into each folder or file and manually give access to that folder/file for them to see it.

I just need the "move" option to be available as part of VES permissions or I need the default values for new files uploaded/saved by a user to not give "A" rights to the person that upload/saved the file to ND. I do not want to give them "A" permissions.

I know this may seem odd but in the law firm atmosphere, the assistants do everything for their attorneys. They file everything and keep things organized. If my assistants cannot move files, that is a big issue.

Hopefully I am not the only one that is having this issue and ND can make the change for us.

Thanks,

We have a client who would like this:no inheritance on folders by default (as it is today), but the ability to add the inheritance feature when needed. In other words, most folders don't need or want the 'A' right. But some folders will need it. They would like this to be an option on the folder save Profile dialog - similar to the current form with the metadata options 'Apply the above profile INHERITANCE to existing subfolders in this folder'.
