Upload documents from NetDocuments to connected sites

After a website is connected to NetDocuments, use the website as normal. When you use the website’s file upload capability (usually accessed by clicking [Upload] or [Browse] from the website), the ndOpen dialog will appear, allowing you to select files from NetDocuments:

You can then navigate to the desired location and select a document. Click Open to upload the document in the format it currently exists in NetDocuments.

  • You may convert the document to PDF format by checking the box next to Convert to PDF.
  • You may save the newly-created PDF as a new version of the existing document by checking the box next to Save exported document as a new version.

Manage connected websites

To manage the websites that you have connected to NetDocuments, click on the extension icon Add-In_Icon.png in the upper right corner and select Manage websites.

This will display the "Manage Websites" page:

The Manage Websites page displays all websites that have been connected with the NetDocuments Chrome Extension, whether they are currently connected or not.

Manage Websites contains the following functionality:

  1. Search: Type text into the Search box to locate a website in the list
  2. Sort: Clicking the arrows will sort the selected column in ascending or descending order
  3. Link/Unlink: Connected websites will be disconnected, and Disconnected websites will be connected. This allows users to reconnect to previously connected websites without first navigating to the website.
  4. Delete: This option will remove the website from the list, requiring a user to navigate to the website to reconnect it.

Administrator’s Guide

Installing the NetDocuments Chrome Extension

The NetDocuments Chrome Extension can be installed independently from the Chrome Store, but requires both ndClick 1.1 (or later) and ndOffice 2.3 (or later) to function properly.

Install with ndClick

The ndClick installer automatically installs the NetDocuments Chrome Extension. Once ndClick is successfully installed, close and restart Chrome for the extension to be activated.

When Chrome restarts, the following prompt will appear:

Click [Enable extension] to enable the NetDocuments Chrome Extension.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If the NetDocuments Chrome Extension is installed by ndClick or through the registry, it is considered by Chrome to be an external extension. Once an external extension is installed, it should only be managed through the registry. If a user removes the extension through the browser, the extension is then considered ‘blocked’ by Chrome. See Troubleshooting the Chrome Extension below for additional information.

Install from the Chrome Web Store

Although the NetDocuments Chrome Extension can be installed with the ndClick installation, it should be installed directly from the Chrome Web Store.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The NetDocuments Chrome Extension requires the following additional software to work properly: ndClick (version 1.1 or later) and ndOffice (version 2.3 or later).

  • Go to the Chrome Web Store
  • Search for NetDocuments (or follow this link)
  • Click the [Add to Chrome] button in the upper right

Install using Registry Keys

Chrome Extensions can be installed through registry keys. This allows Administrators to enable extensions without requiring users to install them from the Chrome Store.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If the Chrome Extension is installed by ndClick or through the registry, it is considered by Chrome to be an External Extension. Once an External Extension is installed, it should only be managed through the registry. If a user removes the extension through the browser, the extension is then considered ‘blocked’ by Chrome. See Troubleshooting the Chrome Extension below for additional information.

The following registry key controls the installation of the NetDocuments Chrome Extension:

mceclip2.png

Path

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Google\Chrome\Extensions
(Windows 32-bit)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Google\Chrome\Extensions
(Windows 64-bit)

Key (folder) fkbfgpllpbhbofnhkefnfeignnanciie
What it does A key in this location allows an external source to point to an extension in the Chrome Store. The name specified above corresponds to the unique ID of the NetDocuments Chrome Extension in the Chrome Store.
String Value update_url
Value data https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx
What it does This URL allows the NetDocuments Chrome Extension to be automatically updated when NetDocuments publishes an updated Chrome Extension. The string value is optional, but contains the only option for automatically updating an External Extension.

Pre-install Managed Websites

When the NetDocuments Chrome Extension is installed, no websites are connected to NetDocuments. This action is generally accomplished by each user on their various computers. However, you may wish to pre-install connections to specific websites (i.e. court websites, government websites, etc.) so that users don’t have to perform this action on each computer.

* NOTE: Connecting to NetDocuments simply means that the [Browse] or [Upload] buttons on these sites will launch the ndOpen dialog to select a document in NetDocuments for uploading.

To pre-install specific websites, you must first connect the sites to NetDocuments on a single computer. After installing the NetDocuments Chrome Extension on a computer, open Chrome and enable the extension. Navigate to each of the desired websites and connect them to NetDocuments. This will place the connection information in a folder which can be distributed to your users.

When you have connected the desired websites, installation files and information about the connected sites is stored in the following locations:

Registry Setting

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Google\Chrome\Extensions\fkbfgpllpbhbofnhkefnfeignnanciie (Windows 32-bit)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Google\Chrome\Extensions\fkbfgpllpbhbofnhkefnfeignnanciie (Windows 64-bit)

Chrome Extension Files

C:\Users\{User}\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\{Profile}\Extensions\fkbfgpllpbhbofnhkefnfeignnanciie

Managed Websites

C:\Users\{User}\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\{Profile}\IndexedDB\chrome-extension_fkbfgpllpbhbofnhkefnfeignnanciie_0.indexeddb.leveldb

NOTE: The items identified above in {red} are placeholders for the user and profile names.

Copy the folders (and their contents) to the appropriate location on the recipient computers to enable ndClick with the managed websites connected.
