NetDocuments is more than just a document or email management software service, but also a technology partner with its customers for enabling the legal industry in information security and governance. Law firms who create and store documents on behalf of their clients must also comply to federally regulated compliance standards related to data sovereignty and security.

What is Customer-managed Storage?

Customer-managed Storage is a paid add-on feature, enabled and disabled at the repository level. Please contact NetDocuments Sales for more information.

Customer-managed Storage takes NetDocuments beyond a web application for managing your documents and allows your firm to customize the service for your unique compliance purposes.

A NetDocuments customer may opt to have documents associated with selected workspaces or matters be co-located in the customer/firm’s facility, inside its own firewalls. The customer may also elect to have some of its workspaces or matters to be co-located at a particular client’s facility. These are on-premises options that will be available to NetDocuments customers. Hosted options will also be available, with details forthcoming.

The NetDocuments Customer-managed Storage technology allows a document repository to be created outside the NetDocuments Global Data Centers and be privately hosted by the customer or the customer's client. The Customer-managed Storage option stores digital files away from the cloud, avoiding multi-tenancy, while still enjoying the processing efficiency and innovations from a secure cloud technology. The Customer-managed Storage is ideal for customers who have a limited selected number of clients who are cloud adverse, and insist in having local disk storage systems in particular locations of their choosing and away from the cloud.

Requirements and configuration settings described below are subject to change. 

What is required to use Customer-managed Storage?

In order to implement Customer-managed Storage, a NetDocuments customer needs custom software installed by a third party partner on a minimum of 6 servers - 3 for object store, 3 for redundancy.

For now, only one vendor (storage system) is supported. Others may be supported in the future.

How does it work with NetDocuments?

To access the Customer-managed Storage console, go to the Repository Administration page.

Click Regional and Private Storage: 

The console will be displayed, listing regional and private storage locations:

NOTE: There are currently no regional storage locations available; the example above is for demonstration purposes only. 

To add a new location, click Add location:

Enter the Name of the location, the URL, the Access Key ID and Access Key secret.
